Spyker drop Dutch driver Albers
Posted: 10 Jul 07 5:43 PM (N/A)

From bbc.co.uk :

Christijan Albers
Albers won his only career points at the US Grand Prix in 2005 for Minardi
Spyker have dropped Dutch driver Christijan Albers with immediate effect because of a problem with sponsorship.

Spyker, who have yet to score a point in nine races, have not yet named a replacement for Albers ahead of the German Grand Prix on 22 July.

"This has been a very difficult decision," team boss Colin Kolles said.

"But the team's ambitious programme has been seriously compromised by non-payment by one of his sponsors and we are faced with no other option."

Albers, 28, was in his second year with the Formula One minnows after making his debut for Minardi in 2005.

The Dutchman scored his only points haul that season, claiming four points after finishing fifth at the US Grand Prix.

Albers has been outperformed by his German team-mate Adrian Sutil this year, his best result his 14th-place finish in Spain.

Spyker's director of Formula One, Michiel Mol, added: "The decision to replace Christijan is one of the hardest I have had to take since becoming involved in the team.

"We would also like to stress this decision has nothing to do with Christijan's recent performances."

Spyker, who took over the Midland team in 2006, has been open about its need for drivers to bring funding with them.

The Dutch team have also hinted that India's Narain Karthikeyan or Austrian Christian Klien could be a potential replacement for Albers.

Karthikeyan is the second Williams test driver while Klien is testing for Honda after three seasons with Red Bull.

Markus Winkelhock, already under contract to Spyker as a test driver, could also be drafted in for the German Grand Prix.

"Narain is one of the options," Kolles added "Williams have been informed about this possibility.

"We are also looking into (doing) Markus a favour."

Sure, after proving himself as a complete idiot in Magny-Cours - wonder why the sponsor dropped him ? Spyker has really absolutely no reason to keep him. I would like to see Christian Klien get a racing seat again - the guy deserves a chance (is Spyker a chance ?)

I have NOT lost my mind — I have it backed up on tape somewhere.

Finally this happened...

I have been waiting for this a long time... Albers was a driver, who nearly ever finished... I would have bet that Christijan would be the first F1-driver to be dropped this season...

I wonder how long are they going to keep Ralf... In my opinion he is the next to be fired...

In my opinion Narain the bunkhitter ought to get Spyker chance... Klien for Toro Rosso at least...

Well its hardly a suprise though is it.... Albers leaving the pitlane with the fuel hose still connected was a stupid mistake that could of been very dangerous....If they wish to be in the pinnacle of motorsport then mistakes like that cant be made...Ok Lewis nearly drove off too early on Sunday...but he did stop before any major movement of the car...I know they get very involved with the racing and want to be back out on track - thast natural -  but lets face it - Lewis is a front runner - Albers all season has been a no hoper..

How Lewis reacted shows how a pro would react - it just makes it perfectly clear that Lewis belongs in F1 and Albers doesn't ! As simple as that !

Markus Winkelhock is replacing Christijan Albers at least in this European GP... Predictions, will he last all the season... I say no.
