McLaren test new wing

McLaren have begun on-track evaluation of an inventive new wing during testing at the Circuit de Catalunya. The British team have taken advantage of the four-week break between the Bahrain and Spanish Grands Prix to try and steal a march on Ferrari.

The centrepiece of their improvements is a front wing that includes an additional plane that passes above the nosecone.

Ferrari and BMW Sauber have also utilised high front wings this season, although neither of their versions passes over the nose completely.

Despite their excellent start to the season, McLaren still lack Ferrari's straight-line speed, and are desperate to close the gap as Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton chase the title.

"It is now very clear that this year's championship will be as much decide din the race to develop the car as the racing that occurs on Sunday afternoons," said chief executive Martin Whitmarsh.

The F1 season restarts in Barcelona on the weekend of 13-15 May with Alonso, Hamilton and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen tied at the top of the points standings on 22.

The wing going OVER the nose ? Too bad the photo here doesn't show that - must look, erhm, interesting.

Any photos anybody ?

McLaren wing it to Spain

McLaren are likely to race a radical new front wing design at next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The wing (pictured) made its debut on the car of reserve driver Pedro de la Rosa during this week's four-day test at the Barcelona circuit that will host the race.

And the team's CEO Martin Whitmarsh confirmed that both world champion Fernando Alonso - who is aiming for back to back home wins - and rookie Brit Lewis Hamilton will both have the option to use the wing, such was its effect

"There is a continuous programme of aerodynamic development on the MP4-22, and during the Barcelona test this week, we had a more obvious one with a high mounted flap on the front wing assembly," said Whitmarsh.

"It is something that has been developed over the last few months within the team. We were pleased with the results of that test and consequentially it will be one of the options available to our drivers during the Spanish GP weekend."

Alonso and Hamilton both currently share the world championship lead with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on 22 points.

Hmmmm, I can't help it - I just don't believe in this strange design - a bit like the Sauber walrus wing. Looks spectacular but has no real effect
