Alonso's success has hurt Spanish motorsport.

From crash.net :

Fernando Alonso's staggering grand prix success has potentially done more harm than good for the future of motorsport in Spain – that is the view of respected team principal Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon.

The reigning double Formula 1 world champion – who claimed McLaren's first victory in 20 races in Malaysia last weekend – has helped to dramatically increase the coverage and popularity of the sport in his native country, which had never won a grand prix prior to his arrival in the top flight back in 2001. It has though, warns Alfonso, come at a price.

“A lot of people talk about the ‘Alonso Effect',” the team principal of GP2 outfit Racing Engineering told Crash.net, “but there were other Spanish drivers in Formula 1 before, like Marc Gene and Pedro de la Rosa for example. As soon as Fernando came along it did heighten the awareness of Formula 1 in Spain tremendously, but the problem is all the sponsors now want to back Alonso and nobody else.

“That means sponsorship has all-but dried up for the rest of Spanish drivers, and after Spanish F3 most drivers find themselves without access to any funding. Fernando was a massive driving force in increasing the popularity of the sport in the country, but on the other hand he is also swallowing up all the funds.”

The former truck and sporstcar racer is certainly an avid supporter of young homegrown talent, with his squad having stormed to six successive Spanish F3 titles since the series' inaugural campaign in 2001, as well as adding the 2002 World Series by Nissan laurels to its increasingly impressive resume.

I don't know who this guy is and what he has done but I know that he is a huge idiot and should know the game better than coming up with absolute rubbish like this. I bet he would rather have a couple of secondary class drivers and then be able to get sponsors for them all.

IDIOT !

I have NOT lost my mind — I have it backed up on tape somewhere.
