The Australian Grand Prix. The start of the season. The time of year we all look forward to from October onwards. But after that race it's difficult to explain why.
One thing did surprise me, though - I would have put money on it being Jenson Button whose arse James Allen would be licking since Michael's departure. So it came as quite a shock to witness Allen wetting himself at the merest sight of Lewis Hamilton instead.
Aside from that, though, was there anything else worthy of note? Actually, yes, there was. Honda's new livery. What on Earth (pardon the pun) is THAT about??? Running without sponsors' decals - can't imagine the companies would like that. Paying all that money to have your name on the car, only to switch the TV on and find that there's a map of Ghana where your corporate logo should be??? Apparently it's an attempt to increase awareness about global warming. All well and good. A noble gesture. But is a machine driving 200 miles with an engine that belts out 700-odd horsepower by burning litres and litres of the remanats of dead dinosaurs and pumping carbon into the atmosphere really a good backdrop for these sort of campaigns? It's almost as laughable as when McDonald's stopped using salt in an attempt to promote healthy eating!
But, other than that, (and DC's unusual fuel saving strategy which involved getting carried on Wurz's nosecone) was there anything worth getting excited about? No, there wasn't. And races like these do nothing but fuel the sport's detractors who say "what's so exciting about watching cars driving around in circles," because it's becoming more difficult to answer them convincingly.
