Fernando Alonso delivered a warning to all McLaren’s rivals by annihilating the rest of the field on the opening day of testing at Valencia in Spain.
In what was the first time that more than three teams have run at the same track together this year, double world champion Alonso lapped the Ricardo Tormo track almost a second clear of his nearest rival.
The 25-year-old Spaniard's best lap of 1:12.538 came in spite of a damp track surface for most of the day and an apparent engine failure that left him stranded out on the circuit late in the afternoon.
Kimi Raikkonen – the man Alonso is replacing at McLaren – ended his first day in Ferrari's new car 0.956 seconds off the pace in second while Renault test driver Nelson Piquet Jr was third.
Fourth was another test driver, Toyota's Franck Montagny, who lost time with a technical problem during the morning, and then with a spin into the gravel later on.
Race driver Jarno Trulli was two places behind him in sixth as both drove new cars.
BMW Sauber test driver Sebastian Vettel was the meat in the Toyota sandwich, while Nick Heidfeld drove the other new machine.
Giancarlo Fisichella was frustrated to be only eighth in his Renault, while Honda's Rubens Barrichello and Williams test driver Kazuki Nakajima completed the top ten.
Barrichello was joined at Honda by test driver James Rossiter, while Super Aguri and Red Bull ran one car each for Takuma Sato and Mark Webber.
14th and slowest was Luca Badoer in a 2006 Ferrari.
