24 hour competition expiry reminder
Posted: 04 Apr 09 3:40 AM (N/A) Modified By anonymous on 4/4/2009 4:02:14 AM)
Hello there, just wondering about the deadline for F1 predictions.

Normally I get my predictions in early, but I've been quite busy this weekend so I decided to rely on the email reminder. The 24 hour reminder arrived with a time stamp of April 3rd 1:04am my time (East coast of Canada) and at about 7:00pm tonight (16 hours after receiving the reminder) I visited the website planning to submit my predictions, only to find that the submission form won't allow me to select a "Race Event". Now it's several hours later and I figured I'd stop by the forum looking for sympathy, or at least the oppertunity to whine and complain. ;)

Obviously I missed the deadline, which saddens me deeply given that I was really looking forward to being active in the competition this season. In any event, with the time zone differences, figuring out the deadline can be very confusing (for me) and I was wondering if there's an easier way. For example, is the deadline always set for a specific number hours before (or after) the final practice session on Friday?

Any help would be appreciated, and btw, these are the picks I was hoping to submit (Rubens is my 3rd DNF choice which can't be seen due to scroll limit). With my luck, this non-submission will end up being the first ever perfect score!  :(

Thanks,
Lorne

Dang, I can't seem to get the image to display. Oh well, here's the link to it: http://i42.tinypic.com/2j1rhwj.gif

Today is clearly not my day. . .   :-/

Hi Lorne,

I will enter the prediction you submitted for you.

The reminders are triggered some time in the morning (CET), mostly around 08:00 on fridays if the race is on sunday

Is there any need for a 48 hour reminder too or should the 24 hour reminder be changed to 48 hours ?

Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot , Freddie, that was very nice of you!

Unfortunately, trying to figure out the actual competition deadline by factoring in the time that reminders are triggered in relation to my own time zone in Canada AND the time zone where the race is taking place... well, let me just say that it makes me feel very stupid because I can never figure it out. lol  ;-(

That's why I think the 24-hour reminder emails are the perfect/easy solution----BUT only if they're accurate. The problem I had with the last 24-hour reminder is that (according to when it was sent) it was off by at least 8 hours. - i.e. I visited the site to submit my picks 16 hours after the 24-hour reminder email was sent and found the competition was closed.

Offering a 48-hour reminder email 'option' is probably a good idea. But if the reminder emails can't be fully accurate then I'd recommend using a static deadline for all F1 weekends based on a specific session. For example, if the deadline is always: 1 hour prior to the start of the 2nd Practice session - figuring out the deadline would be as simple as going to www.formula1.com where the session start times are listed and clicking the "convert to your local time" button.

Just curious, how does the deadline currently work in relation to practice sessions? Is it always before/after a specific session, or can it be before practice #2 one weekend and after practice #2 another weekend?

Another suggestion which IMO would be perfect (but maybe not possible) would be adding a live countdown timer to the RacingPickers.com website. - i.e. "Formula 1 Chineese GP Competition closes in: 1hr 42min"......  Hence, regardless of a persons time zone and the time zone the race is in, it would always be super easy to find out exactly how much time we have left to get our picks in. Having such an easy way to check competition deadlines might also increase website traffic.  :)

For now, as soon as I see my 24-hour reminder has arrived, I'm going to come to the site right away and get a submission in, just to be safe.

Thanks again,
---Lorne

Hi Lorne,

Well, the reminders must be triggered manually and there are many thing which could influence when the message is sent/received. Sometimes all messages are sent within 10 minutes, sometimes it takes several hours, depending on the mailservers response time and many other things. The only thing I can say for sure at the moment is that when you receive the reminder, there is between zero and 24 hours until prediction entry expires. Therefore my suggestion to replace it with a 48 hour reminder. This would mean that when you receive this, there is something between 24 and 48 hours until entry expires.

The time for expiry is midnight CET at two days before race date. F.ex if race date is sunday, 19.04.2009, entry will expire on friday, 17.04.2009 at midnight

Thanks for your feedback

Freddie
